Adelyn's eye condition in early 2016

Dear all friends,

Thank you for your concern for Adelyn all these while.

We are sad to say that Adelyn's cornea transplants had rejected.

All these years, as a mum, I had tried my best to give Adelyn the best treatment for her eyes.

Adelyn was also very happy that she had the oppointunty to 'see' this world for about 18 months.

Today, her cornea on both eyes had rejected. Her vision was back to those day when she only can see shadow. Adelyn is mentally prepared for this day to come.

We are grateful that she had such oppointunty, even just a short period, to see this world.

As there are many pro & con on her eye condition, we had decided not to do anymore transplant for her eyes. Over the last year, she had underwent lot of pains due to her eye conditions.

For her both eyes, one of them is getting high eye pressure, while the other is just opposite. As such, she still need to go for treatment very often to control the eye pressure.

I thank God that she was mentally very strong to go thru these treatments.

Now, I just hope that she will be happy & healthy in her life. Hope to continue to see her cheerful face everyday.

We thank everyone here for your love and concern for her.
Please continue to pray for her . Thank you very much.

May God bless you.

Adelyn's New Album " I can SEE!"

Adelyn's passion for composing music led her wanting to show her appreciation towards her mum by producing new music pieces. This second album was produced to show her appreciation towards her mum, to give her an opportunity to see this world.

Since 2012, Adelyn had her artificial cornea transplants. She had restored her vision about 10%-20% of a normal vision. She is able to see a clearer layout of her surrounding. Sometimes, even can move around on her own without any help.

However, in July 2014 to March 2015, several incidents had happened on her eyes. Rejection of cornea, eye infection & high eye pressure etc. She had again underwent a few more operations.

Adelyn's mum feels upset each time she sent her for an operation.

Mum asked: Do you think mummy had made a wrong decision by sending you for operation from the first time?

Adelyn said: Mummy, you need not feel bad.I'm contented to be able to see, even if it's only for a while!

In this new album, a new piece 'I See It !', is a piece to describe her feeling at the moment when she was able to see rain drops one night.

This album is for sale at $15 each. Thank you for your support towards Adelyn, all this years.

You may email me (mary1668@yahoo.com) your interest of purchase with your address, and I will post the CD to you. meanwhile, you can transfer the payment to Adelyn's account :

Today's operation on right eye.

Dear friends,

Adelyn will be going for one more round of artificial cornea transplant today on her right eye.

Her left eye which just operated on 25th August is recovering well. However, her right eye has sign of rejection. I hope you can pray with me for her operation to go smooth today at 230pm, and also pray for her that wishing this round would be her last operation. 3 operations in a roll in 3 months, It is enough for a young child like her.

These few months, she had been through lots of pains because of the operation. And also caused another impact in my family as the surgeries cost had accumulated up to more than $70K.

Nevertheless, her condition is my most concern and hope you can pray together with me today.

Thank you.

Regards,
Mary (mum)

Going for another operation. Please pray with me

Hi all,

Just a update on Adelyn progress.

Since her last operation in May 2013, Adelyn's vision is much better. Is about 20% of a normal person vision.

Last week, her doctor realised that her left eye behaved unusual. The eye pressure is below the average, and her eye ball has became smaller.

She was immediately sent to a pediatrician eye doctor in SNEC. The doctor found out is membrane issue and suggested to have another operation.

Adelyn will be going for this operation today 08/7/14 @SNEC at 430pm.

I hope you can join me in pray for a smooth operation.

Thank you.

Regards,
Mary Lim

She can now see brightly coloured flowers after two eye operations

Adelyn Koh used to be able to only see shadows and patches of colour.
Now, after two eye operations, the 12-year-old student can discern shapes and people from up to 6m away.
The sight which most excites her is the garden beside her five-room flat at Punggol.
“I can see the brightly coloured flowers on the plants, and their branches and leaves,” said Adelyn, who was born with a rare congenital eye disease.
She made the news last year when she and her mother came up with the idea of selling CDs of her piano compositions to raise about $80,000 for eye operations, and they managed to do so in six weeks.
Read the full report in The New Paper on Saturday (July 13).

26 Jun update on Second ops

Dear Caring friends,

Times flies! Is almost a month after Adelyn's second operation.

This time round, Adelyn is recovering better and faster than the first time. She is able to focus on things after 2 weeks of her operation. She do not feel any discomfort as soon as after her first week of operation.

After 3 check up, Dr Ang had told me that everything on her eyes look good, and her eyes pressure are at normal level. (if her eyes pressure is high, that will be bad for her)

I had attached few photos on how far she is able to focus and what can she do.

Adelyn's well progress is a blessing from everyone. All of you had created a miracle, and given her a second new life! You had made a big turning point in Adelyn and my family's life.

I, on behalf of my family, sincerely thank all of you for making this changes.

May all of you be blessed with all goodness too!

Warmest regards,
Mary & Children

Second Operation on 29 May, Wednesday

Dear caring friends,

Thank you for all blessings for these past months.

After 6 months of recovering period, Adelyn had achieved very big improvement on her right eye. She is able to see big object like building and cars, as far as within 15 - 20 metres.

She is now putting on a spectacles with some degrees to help her to get a clearer picture of her surrounding. According to Adelyn, although her vision on the object is not very sharp, but is much more better than before.

I estimated she should be gaining her vision about at least 20% from her past.

Adelyn will be going for her next operation on her left eye on 29th May 2013, Wednesday @ Mount Elizabeth Novena @ 5pm.

Again, I am here to seek all caring friends here to pray together with me

Adeyln, her sisters and me are looking forward for this exciting day to arrive. We hope everyone here, including all caring friends around the world, could pray together with us for this exciting moment that we had been looking forward to. Kindly forward this message to your friends around.

Once again, thank you for all supports and blessings.

Warmest regards,
Mary & Children

18 April Next operation update

Dear all caring friends,

To keep everyone update, Adelyn most probably will be going for the left eye operation in early June this year.

We had been thru so far to await for the next operation.

The first operation on the right eye was indeed a successful one. Adelyn is able to see her surrounding as far as about 5 metres away. According to her, although the image is not very clear, but is much more better than in those days.

I hereby hope everyone here could once again pray for Adelyn for her next coming operation on the left eye.

I will update again when the time come nearer.

All the best to all of you.

Warmest regards,
Mary & children

19th March update on Today online

Cornea surgery by S’porean specialist a groundbreaking success

Assoc Prof Leonard Ang successfully restored Adelyn Koh’s vision last November through a highly specialised eye reconstruction operation. Photo: Parkway Pantai Group
SINGAPORE — A Singapore eye specialist has performed groundbreaking surgery to restore vision in two children with cornea diseases. It was the first time the operation — which has better long-term success than conventional cornea transplants — had been done in South-east Asia.
The children, 23-month-old Hoang Binh Minh and 11-year-old Adelyn Koh — the former developed blindness in his right eye, while the latter was born blind — had their sight successfully restored last November through a highly specialised and complex eye reconstruction operation known as the Paediatric Boston Keratoprosthesis (KPro) surgery.
The operations were performed by Associate Professor Leonard Ang, Medical Director and Senior Consultant of the Lang Eye Centre. He is the first local surgeon and one of only a few surgeons in the world specially trained to do so.
Corneal blindness is the second most common treatable cause of blindness in the world, with over 20 million cases recorded globally. Cornea transplants had been the conventional but less effective option for restoring vision before the improved surgery was introduced, with more than 80 per cent of paediatric cornea transplants failing within three years.
The KPro surgery “has a much lower rate of graft rejection and is associated with better long-term success”, said Assoc Prof Ang at a press conference yesterday.
He hopes to restore up to 30 per cent of Adelyn’s vision, compared to zero before the surgery, and up to 70 per cent of Binh Minh’s, from less than 5 per cent previously.
Said Adelyn: “Last time, when I climbed steps, all I saw were countless things mounting up. I wouldn’t know how many steps there were. Now I can count up to a maximum of five steps.
“Every time I see something (I couldn’t see before), I get excited, like the colour of MRT seats,” she added.
The procedure is also less costly than cornea transplants. Most patients undergo three or four transplants, each costing S$15,000 to S$20,000, while the KPro surgery costs about S$30,000 and needs to be performed only once.
Other advantages include much faster visual rehabilitation and recovery, the elimination of the need for body-harming immunosuppressants and medication and better quality of vision.
Fewer than eight KPro surgical operations have been performed in Asia.

16 Feb Updates

Dear all caring friends,

This is a very special new year for Adelyn and me.

Adelyn had said a few things that had touched my heart.

1) Once, she stood in the middle of our living room and said "Mummy, so this is how the living room look like. This is the place I had been staying for 10 years, and finally I can see how it look like!"

2) A plate of simple instant noodles was brought infront of her. She said "Mummy, I can see how my favorite noodles' colors! Wow, my plate of noodles so colourful ( different veggie and carrot added).

3) Her two little sisters walking infront of her. She able to tell who is Angelyn & Amelyn based on their height.

4) She able to let go my hand and walked behind me in a arm length.

ALL the above are just a minor, simple and usual things that all of us able to do it. But for Adelyn, she had been through 10 years of blindness and finally able to see these SIMPLE AND USUAL things around her. She maybe just feel happy and surprise, but I am feeling very touch, happy and sad.

We really have to appreciate what we have. Things might be simple and natural to many of us, but remember to appreciate it cos we do not know when we will lose it. Believe in MIRACLES !

Warmest regards,
Mary Lim
